The start of a new year is always a time when people are keen to embrace change and reinvent their look. But the start of a new decade definitely calls for an exciting new style!

The good news is whether you’re looking to add subtle feminine layers or embrace a bold blunt bob; 2020 sees the return of a range of fantastic cuts, colours and styles guaranteed to update your look. We’ve compiled our favourite styles for you below:

Haircuts and styles

Starting with subtle changes, one of the easiest ways to add texture, volume and fun to long hair, is by adding some soft layers. These will immediately add bounce to your hair, creating a boho chic look.

For ladies feeling a little braver, ask your hairdresser to add some more dramatic, choppy layers, to create a striking modern look. People with shoulder or short hair, who are brave enough can take the chop and opt for a bob.

An ode to finally being back in the roaring 20’s, this sophisticated blunt bob was one of last year’s most popular and stylist looks, and it continues its reign this year. Anyone who isn’t sure if such a short cut is not for them can at first try a blunt shoulder cut.

A similar style to the bob (while allowing you to hang on to some of your sacred hair)… this 60’s style (think Jean Shrimpton) will add instant thickness and volume to your hair.

Women who are lucky enough to be born with gorgeous waves or sensational curls can also experiment with layers and choppy cuts, which are shorter at the front and softer around the face.

Finally… bangs are back – and we couldn’t be happier about it! Now some people give bangs a bad rep, but ask any hairdresser, and most will tell you that bangs can be styled in a way to suit almost anyone with any texture of hair. They add an injection of fun and youthfulness, instantly softening the face.

Hair colours

If you’re feeling more of an urge for a change over colour than a cut, then 2020 is also set to be a good hair year for you.

Last year we saw a preference for more muted colours, but this year bright shades are back. If you’re feeling experimental, now is the time to be playful. We always advise anyone thinking about making a dramatic colour change to orange, pink, green or blue to always try a wash out dye first and even a wig. These colours can look amazing, but it is a daunting change and it’s good to try it for a few weeks before committing to that colour!

Blondes… forget 50 shades of grey – this year should be 50 shades of blonde. Stylists are continuing to really break down shades of blonde as much as possible. So whether you’re looking to have ice blonde hair, grey blonde, warm honey blonde, highlight, bold bleach or a warm base blending into ashy balayage, there’s a shade for you and now is the time to try it out.

For brunettes, classic shades are in – think warm rich shades to compliment your skin tone. If you want to switch up your colour slightly and add a touch of red, ash brown or rich raven to your hair, then you can also try balayage, highlights or a light rinse to blend it in. Of course in order to see best results, make sure you have a consultation with a hairdresser you trust and take along an image of your desired look.

2020 is an exciting year for fashion and hair, and changing your hair is a great way to add a sense of style and find inner confidence. We always encourage our clients to be brave and embrace a new look – to make an appointment for a consultation with our internally renowned team book online or call us.
